She asked me what I knew about women's experiences with placenta encapsulation in her specific situation. Since we mostly talk and hear about women taking placenta capsules for the early postpartum period, I wanted to ask my clients what their experience had been and if anyone could relate to this woman's story. Below I've copied and pasted all the responses I received. Once again my amazing clients come through in a big way! You'll see that not everyone who responded specifically could relate to this mom's situation but everyone was very eager to share their personal experience.
"I chose encapsulation for my third given a history of anxiety and postpartum depression. I found it very helpful - and i have some pills left over in case i have it crop up at a later date. I'm 6mo pp now and I do feel very different this time around. Ample milk supply, a decreased rate of anxiety and depression - I would say 95% less than previous births. Given this mother suffers in the later months, i might suggest she take less pills right away, tapering off sooner after birth and having a small amount each day in the first six months?"
"I had PPD and PPA with my first, my son. I was so scared to have a second child because I feared I would go through the same feelings with baby number 2. Why would I bring in another child I would maybe never love? I started Prozac as early as I could during my pregnancy. I looked into other ways to ensure I did not feel the same with my son. I found placenta encapsulation. Some people have said, it is a joke. Well..it is not. I immediately started taking the pills after I had my daughter. While I had days where I was anxious, it never lasted and never, ever amounted to anything other than getting used to having two children. I felt great. I had a TON of energy. I wasn't tired? Why? I say it is all the placenta pills. I still have a few pills left, and when I am feeling "tired" I take them for a few days, and my energy level increases. Could be a fluke..but I don't think so. I will miss my placenta pills once they are gone."
"Not sure what to say other than I was in the same position... and felt like mine got a lot worse around 3 months. Timely that's when the capsules usually ran out. I would say to try to spread them out as much as possible and use the method that warrants the most capsules. Next time maybe I would even try every other day just to have them spread out through 6 months."
"I did want to encapsulate my placenta to help with postpartum anxiety--in fact, that was my main reason. In retrospect, I could have really used encapsulation after my 1st and 2nd children but sadly, I didn't know about it yet. I didn't realize what was happening to me after the birth of my two first was postpartum anxiety, either. Live & learn, as they say, and by my 3rd I was more than ready to try such a fantastic, natural way to help combat the anxiety I had previously experienced. I know many factors go into making a postpartum experience. For example, my husband had weeks more time of leave for our 3rd child's homecoming, which also helped alleviate tension. However, I took 4 capsules of my placenta every day for the first 20 days, then I lowered the dose to 2 capsules a day and the change in my energy level and mood from my first two postpartum periods was ASTOUNDING. I felt less emotional, less exhausted, less irritable. I could cope with so much more and I even noticed an increase in my breast milk production. I have a history of general anxiety and a racing heart, so it can be hard for me to sleep even at the best of times, but after my 3rd came home from the hospital I slept with her whenever I could and got really restful, deep sleep and I credit the capsules. I only wish I had known about encapsulation sooner. I wish every woman knew about it and would do it. I am a hardcore believer."
"My wife was anxious and depressed postpartum--mainly because of her lack of breast milk.
We like to think the encapsulation helped both--at ~$200-300 it was the least expensive thing we have paid for with the birth of our daughter. We would do it again without hesitation."
"I just wanted to say thank you for such a great service! I am only on my first child but I felt fantastic right away after I started the pills. I've now finished the pills and I am on the tincture. I experienced all of the benefits listed in the brochure and I would absolutely do it again!"
"I had placenta encapsulation for my first (and so far only) child. I have not had a history depression but one of my friends encapsulated her placenta and fondly referred to them as her "happy pills" to boost her mood when she was feeling down postpartum. Postpartum I had no depression or anxiety - although I don't know if I would've suffered from these without placenta encapsulation. I will be encapsulating my placenta for any future children."
"The birth of my first baby was challenging, to say the least, and I wish I’d had the support of these tablets. My second child’s birth was beautiful, but I had some complications with blood loss and extended healing afterward. I firmly believe that the placenta capsules help with my physical healing, my milk supply, and my overall mental well-being. I felt a sense of calm and ease, and sheer happiness that contributed to an amazing bond being formed with my second baby. I slept better and had more energy during the day. I’m forever grateful for the work that you do, and for the opportunity to partake in your services. I would wholeheartedly recommend placenta encapsulation to any woman as a vital part of their postpartum care."
"I did not specifically choose placenta encapsulation for anxiety, but I suffer from anxiety occasionally. I have a close friend with severe anxiety that developed after her second child. I didn't even realize postpartum anxiety was a term. My postpartum experience with my second was really rough. Anxiety was part of it, but I figured it was all a normal part of having a new baby. That's why I wanted to try placenta encapsulation this time. I had a wonderful experience with it, and did not get anxiety while taking the pills. I only took 2 a day. Hope that helps!"
"Got your email and wanted to send you a quick message about my experience. I have a generalized anxiety disorder and although I had my first child this past December and have nothing to compare my postpartum experience to I strongly feel the placenta capsules helped me tremendously. After I ran out of them and had done some traveling with my new baby, I ended up "hitting a wall" and admitting to myself that I had postpartum depression (exhaustion played a big role in this). After seeking help and reflecting on my situation it became more apparent after I was done with the placenta pills that them feelings and emotions came full force. I know they helped me a ton and I would do them again 100%."
"I found that the placenta encapsulation was very helpful in warding off the anxiety. That was one of the biggest reasons I chose to do it and I am so glad I did!"
"I did not experience postpartum depression/anxiety with my first two babies, I did not take placenta pills with them. However, I did suffer from severe postpartum anxiety after weaning my third baby at 7 months.
By then, my placenta pills were long gone. I had finished them around 3 months PP. The pills helped me so much. They gave me energy and a complete sense of well-being during those 3 months. I felt so much joy! Knowing what I know now about my body and experience, I would have saved a couple of months worth of pills for when I weaned her. My suggestion for mitigating the anxiety a few months after baby is born is to save some pills for that time."
